Stopped by the old RadioShack building in my hometown and it hit different

They turned it into a phone case kiosk, which is just weird to see. I remember going there with my dad in the 90s to get resistors and capacitors for projects. The whole wall of parts bins is gone, replaced by glittery iPhone covers. Makes you think, right? What's the modern equivalent for a kid who wants to learn by fixing things now? Is it just ordering a bag of random components online and hoping for the best?

I got into Arduino kits with my son, they have all the basic parts and clear projects. It's not the same as digging through bins, but it gets you building and troubleshooting. Online tutorials fill in the rest of the learning gap.

Yeah, the kits are great... until you need that one weird resistor you don't have and the project just stares at you.

My first Arduino kit sat on the shelf for months because the projects felt like paint by numbers. Honestly, following a pre-made list of parts doesn't teach you how to actually design or fix anything yourself. You just learn to connect point A to point B. The real problem solving starts when you have to figure out why your own weird idea won't work, and a kit doesn't give you that. Tbh, it's like learning to cook using only meal kits, you never really learn how to shop or substitute ingredients.

A phone case kiosk? That's just wrong.
