Disagree completely - sometimes you learn more from fixing it wrong, @robins83.

Man I've been there, nothing worse than fixing something twice when you could've just done it right the first time.

I just saw a report that said something like 60% of DIY bathroom renos end up needing some kind of redo within the first year... That buddy's story about skipping the backer board is exactly why. You think you're saving time and money, but really you're just buying yourself a headache and a weekend of tearing stuff out. There's no shortcut for good prep work, and cutting corners on the foundation always comes back to bite you. I've heard it called the "cheap, fast, good" triangle, and you can only ever pick two... and fast and cheap just means you'll be doing it all over again later.

Had a buddy who decided to redo his own bathroom tile. Did the whole job in a weekend, looked great. Three weeks later the grout started cracking and the floor felt spongy. Turns out he skipped the backer board because he thought it was overkill. Had to tear out the whole thing, buy new tile, and do it over with the right materials. @david_jones38 I'll bet he learned a lot from that second fix, but he still says he would've paid double just to have done it right the first time and kept his weekends.
