My barber in Austin told me he quit his office job to cut hair after his dad got sick.

We were in his shop on a Tuesday morning and he just said, 'Watching the clock for a paycheck felt like a slow death when I could be doing this.' It made me wonder if we overvalue security or undervalue doing work that actually means something to us. What's a small comment from someone that flipped a switch in how you see your own job?

Yeah, that "slow death" line hits hard, my old boss said something similar right before he quit.

My barber's story makes @lilyp37's point about wanting both security and meaning pretty tough to figure out.

Wait, isn't that undervaluing security and undervaluing meaningful work?

Oh man, I see what you mean, but that's not really it. It's more about different people wanting different things. Some folks really do just want a steady paycheck, and that's totally fine for them.
