My brother said my guitar playing sounded like I was scared of the notes

He told me to 'stop apologizing with the volume knob' and just hit the strings, which completely flipped how I practice. Anyone else get a piece of advice that broke a bad habit you didn't even know you had?

Wait, is that what he meant by apologizing with the volume knob? I always took it as playing too quiet, but my teacher said it was more about timid picking, not just the amp volume. Did your brother explain it further? That's a really cool way to put it either way. I had a similar thing where I was told my strumming hand was too stiff, like I was scared to move it. Took forever to unlearn that.

What was the first song you played after that advice?

Actually, it was a riff, not a full song.
