My old pressure canner blew its gauge during a batch of green beans last Thursday
I was in the middle of processing 14 quarts when the needle just stuck and the whole thing started hissing. I had to shut it down fast and lost the whole batch. It made me realize I'd been trusting that 20-year-old equipment way too much just because it 'always worked before.' Anyone have a reliable brand they've used for over a decade without issues?

Glad you shut it down fast, that hissing is no joke. Just a heads up, the gauge sticking is a symptom, not the main failure. The real problem was probably the safety plug or the seal giving out first. Those old gauges get sticky and read wrong, but they rarely cause the blowout themselves. I'd check the rubber gasket and the overpressure plug before blaming the dial. My mom's canner did the same thing, and it was a ten cent safety plug that had gone soft.

That safety plug tip from @evakelly makes sense... how old was your mom's canner when that plug went soft?

Spot on from @evakelly, it's always the cheap part you ignore that fails first, like a phone charger cable.
