Showerthought: My kid's question about a dead robin in the yard last month

My daughter, Chloe, pointed at it and just asked 'where did the flying go?'... I fumbled for an answer about heaven, but her question stuck with me for days. It hit me that we always talk about where things 'go' after, but never about where the things they do, like flying or laughing, disappear to. Has anyone else had a simple kid question totally shift how they see something normal?

Nah, kids just overthink stuff, @spencer782. The flying just stops.

That's a really good question from her. My son asked something similar about a cricket that stopped chirping. I told him the sound didn't go anywhere, it just stopped being made, but the quiet it left behind was now part of our yard. It felt less like a loss and more like a change. Kids have a way of pointing out the holes in our grown-up explanations. Your answer about heaven was probably fine, but it's wild how their logic makes you stop and actually think.

My friend's kid asked where the light goes when you turn off the fridge. She said it just stops, but he kept staring at the dark inside like he was waiting for it to come back. She ended up saying the dark wasn't empty, it was just the shape of the fridge without light, which sounds weird but made him nod. It's funny how they push you to find new ways to see ordinary things.
