Shoutout to the client who asked me why I always start with her right cheek
She pointed out that her left side is more reactive, and starting there with a gentler touch first has made her extractions way less painful, so now I always ask about side sensitivity during the intake.

Wait, she knew her own face that well? That's a level of self-awareness I've never had about my own skin. I can't even tell you which side of my nose gets oilier. For a client to pinpoint that specific detail and connect it to the pain level, that's actually pretty sharp. Makes you wonder what else we're missing by not asking those simple questions. Good on you for adding it to your intake now.

Right? I can't even tell which side of my nose gets oilier either.

Yeah, that "which side gets oilier" thing @the_troy mentioned is a great detail to notice. I've found just having someone feel their own face with clean hands for a second can show them the difference. It makes the whole check-up way more useful for them.

How are you supposed to know which side is oilier anyway? I've been washing my face in the shower for years and I still couldn't tell you. It's wild that some people just pay that much attention to their own skin. That kind of self-awareness sounds like it comes from years of trial and error, not just a casual glance in the mirror. Good on your client for figuring it out and then telling you, because most folks would just suffer through the pain without saying a word. You're right too, it makes you think about all the little things we don't ask but really should.
