Can we talk about how fast we went from 'privacy matters' to 'just scan my face'

Five years ago everyone was up in arms about Facebook tracking, now I walk into my local gym and they scan my fingerprint to check in. Are we just giving up on privacy because it's convenient, or is this actually a fair trade-off?

Friend of mine signed up for a gym that uses fingerprint scanning and didn't think twice until he couldn't cancel his membership without going in person. Now he's pretty sure that fingerprint is tied to some third party data company the gym partnered with. Realized way too late that convenience has a cost, and it's usually your personal info.

Seems like everything smart is just a way to track you now, @the_jennifer.

That fingerprint story is a rough way to learn a hard lesson about convenience.
