My stance on shop cameras shifted when I learned where the data goes

I thought these systems only prevented theft. Finding out they profile shoppers and sell insights without permission changed my mind. How do we keep our privacy safe in places we shop?

But is profiling really that bad? @pats66 mentioned phone tracking, but it's mostly for ads and store layouts anyway.

Think about what store cameras really do. I mean, they might profile shoppers, but idk if it's that serious. Most data is just for store layout and ads, not to spy on us. We give away more info on social media anyway. Maybe privacy in stores isn't worth freaking out over. It's just how business works now.

Wait, I read they track your phone without asking.

After I found out my local grocery chain was doing this, I started paying with cash more often. It breaks the link between my bank card and what I buy. Turning off my phone's wifi before walking in helps too, since they can't ping it as easily. It's a few small habits that add up to taking back a little control.
