Appreciation post: My honesty about a pricing error got me more work

I accidentally underquoted a roofing job but told the customer straight up instead of hiding it. They appreciated the honesty and ended up hiring me for another project, which was a nice surprise. When's a time being upfront about a mistake actually worked out for you?

Admitted I overcharged for mulch once, and the guy just laughed, saying he'd finally found an honest landscaper.

Your roofing job underquote, what was the actual cost difference? I see people hide mistakes and it always blows up in their face. Being that honest must have been tough. Did the customer second guess your work when you told them? Or did coming clean actually make them see you as more reliable?

Yeah, coming clean made them see him as more reliable, my buddy’s mechanic did that once.

Totally! I messed up a plumbing quote last year by forgetting the cost of a special part. Told the homeowner it was my error and I'd eat the cost. They were so chill about it they tipped me extra and called me back to redo their bathroom a few months later.
