I changed my mind about calling the cops on my neighbor's loud party
Last Saturday night around 11 PM, my neighbor's party was shaking my walls in Phoenix (I could hear the bass through my headphones). My first thought was to call the non-emergency line, but I remembered a post here about escalating conflicts. Instead, I walked over, knocked, and calmly asked the guy who answered if they could turn it down a notch. He apologized, said they lost track of time, and lowered the volume within 5 minutes. I used to think the official route was always best, but a direct, polite ask fixed it without any drama. Has anyone else found that talking first works better than you'd expect?

Guess you found the one house party in Phoenix not run by actual demons.

My neighbor's party last year ended with a broken window.

Seriously? You got lucky this time... but what if they'd been drunk or aggressive? Most people throwing a late party that loud aren't in a reasonable mood. I'd never risk a face-to-face confrontation over some noise, it's just not worth the potential hassle. The official route exists for a reason.

Actually read a study about this once. It said most noise complaints between neighbors get solved just by talking first. Calling the cops right away can make things way worse later on.
