I saw a coworker get passed over for a promotion because of a single mistake from 8 months ago.
We were in the break room in Chicago when our manager said they 'couldn't trust her with bigger projects' based on that one old error. I spoke up and said that was unfair, and it started a huge argument about how long a person should be penalized. Has your workplace ever held something against someone for way too long?

My buddy Dave got written up for a tardy in 2019 and they still bring it up in his reviews.

What kind of metrics does your manager use to judge growth then? If they're ignoring eight months of good work for one old slip, their whole system seems broken. Does your company even have a real policy for how long stuff stays on your record, or is it just up to whoever holds the grudge?

That's messed up. How are people supposed to grow if they're never allowed to move past old stuff? Sounds like a manager who'd rather hold a grudge than actually lead. Your coworker is lucky to have you speak up for her. Some places just have a real bad habit of keeping score forever.
