I used to think tipping for takeout was optional, but a friend changed my mind
My friend who works at a local cafe in Seattle said they still have to tip out the kitchen staff based on total sales, even on pickup orders. If someone doesn't tip, they're essentially paying that tip share from their own pocket for that order. I never knew the system worked like that behind the counter. What's the right thing to do for a simple coffee or sandwich pickup?

Guess I've been accidentally stiffing my favorite baristas for years. My bad, tipping math was never my strong subject. I'll throw in a buck for pickup now.

That's a messed up system if true... but is it really the customer's job to fix a bad pay structure? Sounds like the cafe owner is passing the cost onto workers and then onto us. For a simple pickup, a dollar or two seems fine if you want to, but I don't feel obligated.
