I was reading a study about jury duty and learned that over 40% of people in my county actively try to get out of it.

It was in a local news article about civic participation, and it made me wonder if we have a moral duty to serve or if it's okay to avoid a system that can be a real burden.

Got to disagree. It's a broken system that ruins lives. Saw a guy lose his job for missing two weeks of work. The pay is a joke, barely covers gas. If they fixed the real problems, people would show up.

I mean, I get what you're saying about the pay being bad. But I've seen it work for some people. My cousin got called for jury duty last year and her boss had to give her the time off, no questions asked. The court even paid for her parking downtown. Maybe it depends on where you live or the specific job, but the system isn't completely broken for everyone.
