Lending cash to a friend who takes forever to pay back

Delayed repayments make me rethink lending ethics.

Do you still consider it a loan at that point, or does the long delay turn it into a gift you didn't agree to give? That seems to be where the ethical line gets blurry for me.

Honestly, the real cost is the trust that gets lost, which @anna_ellis88 hinted at. Once that deadline passes, the money feels less important than the broken promise.

Set a clear deadline when you loan money so there's no confusion. If they blow past it, remind them directly and don't sugarcoat it. Let this decide if you ever lend to them again.

Yeah, that's a hard spot to be in. When they miss the deadline, the loan feels more like a gift you didn't mean to give. I've seen this happen with family loans, and it always strains the relationship. It really does blur the line between helping and being taken advantage of.
