My cousin in Phoenix got a job offer because her friend works there.

She told me last month she was applying for a marketing role, and her friend put in a good word that basically got her the interview. It worked out, she got hired, but now I'm wondering if that's fair to other people who applied. Is getting a job through a personal connection an unfair advantage?

Networking is just the hidden job market, right?

Yeah, it basically is. I got my last job because a guy I met at a conference told me his company was hiring before they even posted the ad. You have to actually talk to people, not just add them on LinkedIn.

But is it that big a deal, @davis.david?

Welcome to how the world works, people. It's not what you know, it's who you know. Always has been.
