My crew spent 12 hours on a job we quoted for 3, and the homeowner offered to pay extra.

We were replacing a main sewer line under a concrete slab, but found the old pipe had been patched with tar and cloth in three places we couldn't see on the camera. My lead guy said, 'This is a whole different animal.' Do we take the extra money they offered, or stick to the original quote since we misjudged the scope?

That tar and cloth patch job is a classic sign of a previous cheap fix. Taking the extra money covers your crew's brutal day and discourages them from cutting corners next time. Your reputation for fair dealing is worth more than the original quote right now.

Ever had to redo a patch job that just made the real problem worse? Charging for the extra work is the only way to stop that cycle.
