My neighbor in apartment 3B said he'd never return a lost wallet with cash in it
I overheard him telling someone in the laundry room that he found one last month, took the $40, and tossed the rest in a dumpster a few blocks away. It made me wonder where the line is between finders keepers and a basic duty to try and return someone's important stuff. What would you have done?

But what about the ID and cards... that's just cruel to toss those.

Scan everything with your phone before you toss the wallet. Keep digital copies of the IDs and the front/back of any cards. Then you can cut up the plastic cards and shred the paper stuff safely.

Last summer I found a wallet in a grocery store parking lot with over two hundred bucks in it. Honestly, I drove it right to the address on the license because I pictured someone panicking. The woman who answered the door almost cried, she had just canceled all her cards. Tossing that stuff is just adding so much stress on top of someone losing their money. It takes maybe twenty minutes to do the right thing and save someone a huge headache.

Heard a story from my buddy Jake that changed my mind on this. He found a wallet at a bus stop, totally stuffed with cash and cards. He tracked down the guy on social media and returned it all. Turns out the cash was for the guy's kid's birthday present that day. The relief on that dad's face, man. That's why just taking the money like your neighbor did feels so messed up. Like @taylorshah said, tossing the ID and cards is next level cruel, you're ruining someone's whole week for a few bucks.
