Pro tip: I realized I was giving my team credit for my ideas to avoid conflict, which just made things worse.

A junior developer in Chicago pointed out last week that my 'collaborative' praise during a project review made it impossible for leadership to see her actual, separate contributions, and honestly, how do you balance giving credit without accidentally erasing someone's work?

My buddy had this happen at his old marketing job. He kept saying "we" came up with a campaign idea when it was really his coworker's whole plan. The coworker got passed over for a promotion because the boss thought they were just a team player, not the idea person. It got super awkward and my friend felt awful. He learned to name names, like "Sarah's concept for the video was what made it work.

Ever notice how group projects in school always had that one kid who did nothing but still got the A?

Credit where credit's due saves a lot of trouble later.
