PSA: Giving old furniture a paint job can be the ethical choice, despite what purists say

I restore and repaint thrift store finds as a hobby, and I often hear that altering vintage pieces destroys their value and history. However, if a chair or table is too worn for simple repair, a creative makeover stops it from being tossed out and reduces waste. For instance, I took a beat-up 1970s desk that was headed for the dump, sanded it down, and painted it with eco-friendly paint for my home office. I believe extending an item's life through change is more responsible than letting it rot in a landfill just to keep it 'pure'.

Those purists act like you're spray painting the Mona Lisa. It's a busted desk from the 70s, not a national treasure.

Relax, it's just a desk.

Read an article about how some mid-century furniture fans will pay crazy money for original finish, even on beat-up stuff. Like hundreds just for a chip of old varnish. Kinda wild when a fresh coat of paint would make it usable again for normal people.

That original patina tells the whole story, man.
