Lost my keys at the Everett marina last Saturday and found them with a trick
I was dropping off crab pots at the 10th Street boat launch and dropped my keys right into the gravel. After 20 minutes of digging around, I used a strong magnet from my tackle box to sweep the area and pulled them up from under a rock. Has anyone else used a magnet for lost metal stuff around here?

You ever drop something metal into the bilge of a boat? I did that once with a socket wrench, and it was like it vanished into thin air. I ended up using one of those magnetic pickup tools with a telescoping handle to fish it out from under the engine. Saved me a lot of cussing, I'll tell you that. That magnet trick of yours is a good one, I might just toss a stronger magnet into my truck's glove box for next time I'm near the water.

Wait, is this really a problem people have? I mean, how often are you dropping your keys into gravel or bilge water? @emma_flores makes it sound like a regular thing, but I've been fishing that marina for five years and never once dropped anything important. Seems like the real trick is just being more careful in the first place. A magnet is a bandaid for being clumsy, not some genius hack. And honestly, dragging a magnet around a boat launch probably just picks up random rusty nails and fishing hooks, not your keys. You got lucky this time, but I'd rather spend 20 minutes using my eyes than chancing a magnet that might scratch up my keys or miss them entirely.

Honestly, have you ever actually dropped something into bilge water, @the_jennifer? It's not about being clumsy, it's about tight spaces and bad lighting down there. Plus, a magnet isn't gonna scratch keys unless you're dragging it like a maniac, and most of us are careful enough to avoid that. Tbh, spending 20 minutes squinting into dark water sounds way less effective than a quick sweep with a magnet. I get your point about random junk, but isn't it better than just giving up and losing the damn keys?
