My dad told me to never trust a 'quick fix' for a noisy car.

He said it for years. My old Honda started making a weird rattle last week. A friend said to just put in thicker oil, a cheap fix. Did it. The noise stopped for two days. Then the engine started knocking hard. Towed it to the shop in Springfield. Mechanic said the thicker oil hid a real bearing problem, now it's a $1200 repair. Should have listened to my dad from the start. Anyone else have a simple piece of advice they ignored and paid for?

So did your buddy also offer to fix it with a roll of electrical tape next? Sounds like his "quick fix" was just a way to make the problem quieter until it got expensive. Bet he won't be your go-to mechanic anymore, huh?

Thicker oil hid a bearing problem" is wild. I can't believe it worked for two days just to blow up like that.

Seriously, what kind of oil did they even try to use? Thicker oil just masks the noise, it doesn't fix the metal-on-metal grinding. I'm surprised it lasted two hours, let alone two days.

Two whole days? That's the crazy part. The thicker oil must have been fighting a losing battle the whole time, like trying to stop a dam leak with duct tape. You got just long enough to think you were smart before it all went bad. Classic case of the fix being worse than the noise.
