My 'quick' fix for the kitchen drawer turned into a two hour puzzle

I just wanted to tighten the loose handle on the silverware drawer, a five minute job. But the screw was stripped and the whole drawer front came off in my hand, revealing a weird bracket system from the 80s. I spent over two hours trying to figure out how to reattach it without the original parts, using zip ties and a lot of guesswork. Has anyone else had a simple home repair blow up like that? What's your go-to fix for old drawer hardware?

Honestly, the age of the house itself is the real puzzle. I mean, my place was built in the 70s and every drawer has a different weird system, like they used whatever was on sale that week. I've stopped trying to find the right parts. I just keep a box of assorted brackets and L-shaped metal pieces from the hardware store, and I Frankenstein it together until it holds. It's never pretty but it closes.

Honestly @nancyn69, that's just the 70s house version of modern art, all weird angles and mystery.

Two hours on a drawer handle is brutal, I would have given up after 30 minutes lol.

Find the original bracket style online, it saves so much time.
