Showerthought: The 'good old days' weren't always better, and my grandpa's story proved it.

I was helping my grandpa clean his garage in Mesa last weekend, and he pointed to an old, heavy metal toolbox. He said, 'This thing is a pain. I'm glad you can buy a plastic one that weighs nothing now.' Everyone talks about how things were built to last back then, but he told me he'd rather have the lighter, cheaper option that doesn't hurt his back. It made me realize we often miss the old stuff without thinking about the real daily hassle. Has anyone else had a family member change their mind about something 'vintage' being better?

Oh man, my buddy Dave had the same thing happen with his dad's old lawn mower! His dad always said the new ones were junk, but that old metal beast was so hard to start and weighed a ton. Last summer it finally died, and Dave bought a light new one. His dad tried it and admitted it was way easier to push and actually started every time. He said he wasted years being stubborn about the old one!

My dad was the same way about his old table saw from the 80s. He bragged about how it was built like a tank and would outlast anything made today. Then last winter the motor finally seized up and he borrowed my brother's new portable saw. He called me later that night sounding half annoyed and half amazed that it was quieter, cut straighter, and didn't shake his whole workshop. He admitted he'd been romanticizing that heavy beast for way too long just because it was old.

Hang on, your dad's cast iron pan or the table saw?
