Unpopular opinion: I heard a kid at the grocery store ask his mom why the sky was blue and her answer changed my whole week.

She didn't just say 'because it is,' but actually stopped, crouched down, and tried to explain light scattering with her hands, which made me realize I've stopped asking 'why' about simple things for years now, so what's a basic thing you've recently stopped to question?

Wait, wait - two nostrils actually take in air at different rates? That is wild, I literally never knew that was a thing. I mean, I just figured we had two for backup or something, not that they were secretly working together like some kind of weird smelling computer. Kinda makes me want to go sniff something right now just to see if I can notice the difference.

My nephew asked me last week why we have two nostrils.

Honestly thought it was just a backup in case one got stuffed up! But turns out they work together to help us smell better. Each nostril takes in air at a slightly different rate, which lets our brain compare the smells. This actually helps us figure out where a smell is coming from. It's a pretty cool bit of body design when you learn about it.

Remember when my buddy tried to cook with one nostril plugged? He couldn't tell if the milk was bad. Had to get his wife to sniff it.
