Heard a cashier say something simple about tipping that changed how I think about it

I was at the diner on Main Street last Tuesday and the cashier told a customer, 'A tip isn't a reward for good service, it's a share of the meal's cost.' It made me realize I've been treating tips as optional bonuses instead of part of the bill. Has anyone else thought about tipping this way?

Wait a cashier actually told a customer that out loud?

Honestly I feel for that cashier so much. Working with the public can just drain everything out of you sometimes, especially when people act like a coupon is life or death. Ngl I've wanted to say stuff like that more times than I can count.

Oh man I absolutely believe it. I've been on both sides of the register and let me tell you, sometimes the filter just... breaks. Last week I was at the grocery store and the cashier was so done with this lady arguing over a coupon that she just goes "ma'am the computer says no and so do I." I literally choked on my gum. Some people just have that kind of energy where you can't help but let it slip out. Honestly I'm kind of jealous of that cashier. Wish I had that kind of backbone when I worked retail instead of just standing there smiling while people yelled at me over like 50 cents off a loaf of bread.
