I gave my neighbor's kid $20 for mowing my lawn, but his dad made him give it back.

Turns out the dad thinks chores build character and paying kids ruins that. Now I'm stuck wondering if helping out actually hurt the lesson. What's the right move here, pay in secret or respect the parent's rule?

Have you tried talking to the dad directly? Offer to pay for something specific, like a movie ticket, so it feels like a reward instead of a wage. That way you respect his rule but still show the kid his work has value.

Ever feel like you're stuck between being nice and respecting a parent's rule? I get it, and @morgan.rose has a decent point about finding a middle ground.

Wait, but paying for a ticket is still paying him, which breaks the rule.
