My friend called me out for always being late to our Tuesday book club

She said, 'Avery, your 'five minutes' is actually twenty, and it makes everyone feel like their time isn't important.' It hit me hard because I never saw it as a real ethical issue, just a bad habit. I started setting an alarm for 6:15 PM sharp, and now I'm always the first one at the coffee shop. Has anyone else had a small criticism that made you rethink a bigger principle?

Your friend was right to call it an ethical thing. Being late is basically telling people their time is worth less than yours. It's a small act of disrespect, even if you don't mean it. Setting that alarm shows you GET it now. Good on you for making the change.

Man, that whole "five minutes is actually twenty" thing is way too real. @the_thea is spot on about it being a respect thing, even when it's not on purpose. I used to do the same with my weekly game night, always rolling in after everyone set up. What finally clicked was treating the start time like a bus schedule, like if I'm not there at 7:00, the bus leaves without me. Now I aim to be there ten minutes early, just to chill and get my head in the game. It really does change the whole vibe for everyone.
