My neighbor's package sat on my porch for a week and I finally opened it

It was addressed to them but delivered to my house in Portland last Tuesday. I waited three days, then figured it might be something that could spoil. It was just a pair of socks. Now I have to decide if I tell them I opened it or just slide it onto their step and pretend it just arrived. What's the move here?

Just put the socks on their porch with a short note explaining the mix-up.

Check your local laws first because technically opening mail not addressed to you is a federal offense, even if it was misdelivered. Most people don't care about socks, but some folks are weird about legal stuff and could make it awkward. Just leave the package and say it showed up late if they ask.
