My sister said she'd rather get a bad review than lie about a product being in stock

We were talking about her small plant shop in Portland and a customer called asking for a specific fern she didn't have. She told them it was out, even though she could have said it was 'low stock' to get them in the door. She said, 'A wasted trip feels like stealing their time.' It made me think about all the little white lies in customer service. When is a small fib okay to make a sale, and when does it cross a line?

Honestly, your sister is a saint. Most places would say "we might have one in the back" and then just shrug when you get there.

Wait, she'd actually call another store for you? That's next-level service. I've had people tell me to check online myself while I'm standing right in front of them. Your sister must have the patience of a rock. I'd probably just accept the shrug and give up.

Oh man, the "we might have one in the back" line is such a classic letdown. It feels like they just say it to get you off the phone. My sister would actually go look, and if it wasn't there, she'd call another store for you. That's the real difference, putting in the tiny bit of extra effort.
