Saw a guy at the grocery store put back a dented can of beans.

He looked around first, like he was checking if anyone saw him. Is that wrong, or is it just smart shopping?

Checking if anyone saw him" is the weird part. It's not wrong to put back damaged goods, but acting sneaky about it is just odd.

Spot on, @the_claire. Watch people at a self-checkout sometime. They move like they're defusing a bomb, not scanning soup. That guy with the beans probably thought he'd get in trouble for not buying damaged goods. We're all just one step away from apologizing to a loaf of bread.

Yeah, the "checking if anyone saw him" thing is what gets me, like @the_diana said. It's part of this whole vibe where people treat totally normal stuff like it's a crime. I see it all the time, like someone apologizing for taking the last newspaper, or whispering when they ask for a price check. We've gotten weird about just existing in public.

My grocery store has that same vibe, like @the_diana said.
