Remembering the week we paid off our car and the furnace broke
It was a Tuesday in October, we had just sent the final $4,200 payment for the minivan and felt so free. The very next morning, the old furnace in our Spokane house gave out with a loud clunk, needing a full $6,500 replacement. How do you all handle it when a big win gets wiped out by a bigger bill right away?

Oh man, that's just how it goes, isn't it? The universe saw your bank account breathe a sigh of relief and immediately sent a bill collector. It's like a sick joke, getting that one debt off your back just to get slapped with a new one that's even bigger.

Ugh, I feel that. When my car was finally paid off, the transmission went two months later. I started putting half my old car payment into a separate savings account right away, just for repairs. It saved me when the AC died last summer.

Transmissions are a big repair but AC work is usually cheaper. My compressor replacement last year was under a grand. Setting aside money is smart, but the bills aren't always bigger.
