Appreciation post: My old boss in Boise taught me to always use a hoof stand, but I think it slows you down.

Last week I trimmed a quarter horse in under 20 minutes by just holding the leg. Has anyone else ditched the stand for certain jobs?

Totally feel you on the stand slowing you down. My old mentor was the same way, swore by it for every single trim. I started skipping it on calm horses a few years back and my speed went way up. For a basic maintenance trim on a good horse, I'm never going back to the stand.

Get that, speed matters on the easy ones.

My last stand saved me from a spook that would have broken my ankle.

Hold onto that leg and hope the horse doesn't sneeze. I tried that once with a draft cross that had a bad temper and ended up hopping around the barn like a fool while he dragged me three feet. Now I keep the stand close by, but I'll take your bet on the quarter horse any day.
