Swapped my anvil for a beat-up one at a farm auction last spring
Picked up a rusty Fisher anvil for $80 at a farm auction in Iowa, figured I'd just use it for rough work. Turns out the rebound is way better than my $400 new one, now I'm kicking myself for not checking hardness before I bought the first one. Any of you guys ever find a hidden gem at an auction that changed your setup?

And that old Fisher had been sitting right there the whole time while you were banging away on that new one. Did you notice any chipped edges or cracks on the face when you got it home? I bet that Iowa dirt hid some real character under all that rust.

Three bucks says the "character" is just more dirt packed in a hairline crack. @jana_shah is acting like it's some sacred artifact when really it's just a rusty old Fisher. People find these things all the time, it's not that deep.

Those old Fishers really do hold onto grime like nothing else. I actually pulled a '54 out of a creek bed last fall and spent two weeks cleaning what I thought was a date off the reverse, turned out to be a rust bubble shaped like a 4. I feel for @jana_shah though, sometimes you get so HOPEFUL for a real find that the smallest thing gets you excited. It's hard when someone just writes it off without even looking at it in person.
