I finally wore my handmade asymmetrical top to a friend's dinner party

My top had one long sleeve and one short, which got mixed reactions. Some friends said it was creative and fun, but a few thought it was too odd for a casual get together. It made me debate if fashion should be safe for easy chats or bold to show personal style. Where do you stand on designing for everyday talks versus making a statement?

What's funny is how this happens with totally normal stuff too, like someone buying fancy cheese at the grocery store and getting side-eye. People get weird about any small choice that stands out. @the_pat is right that we shouldn't need permission. That dinner party is exactly where you should wear the cool top. It feels like we're all supposed to blend in now, even at casual events, which just makes everything boring. Your asymmetrical sleeve is a quiet way to push back on that.

I used to play it safe, but this changed my mind.

Your top having one long sleeve and one short sleeve is such a neat idea. I'm actually shocked that friends called it too odd for a simple dinner party. Since when do we need permission to wear interesting clothes to hang out? Everyday fashion should let you show your personality, not hide it. Making a statement with what you wear makes conversations more fun anyway.

Honestly, @the_pat has a point, but the coolest part might be that the mixed reactions prove your top worked. Getting a few "that's odd" comments means you successfully broke up the usual boring small talk and gave people something real to react to. That's way better than just blending in with another safe outfit.
