My attempt at a pocket dress turned into a lumpy mess

I really wanted to design a cute summer dress with big pockets. Sketching it out seemed simple enough at first. But when I started sewing, the pockets made the hips look all puffy and weird. I used a light linen fabric that shows every little bump. Now I have to pick out all the stitches and try again. It's so annoying because pockets are supposed to be useful, not ugly. I feel like I wasted a whole weekend on this.

Did you try flat pockets instead of patch ones? Sometimes that helps with the bulk... picking stitches is the worst though.

Have you tried making the pockets with the seams turned in? I did that on a vest and it cut down on bulk. The fabric lays smooth now and no stitches to pick out.

Ugh that's the worst. Read somewhere that moving the pocket placement forward an inch helps with the hip puffiness. Like closer to the side seam than the actual hip curve. What @robertlane said about flat pockets makes sense too, less to bunch up. Linen is so unforgiving, every little lump shows. Hate when you spend all that time and have to take it completely apart.
