A client's comment about chain link made me think twice
I was finishing a job in Springfield last week, a standard six foot chain link for a dog run. The client, an older guy, watched me and said, 'You know, it's a shame people think this is the cheap option. It's the only one that lets you see through it.' I've always pushed wood or vinyl for looks, but he's right. For a corner lot or a place where you need to keep an eye on kids or traffic, chain link has a real use. It's not just about the price tag. Anyone else run into a situation where the 'ugly' fence was actually the right call?

My neighbor in Oak Park insisted on chain link for his front yard last year. He said the same thing about keeping an eye on the street and his kids. I fought him on it, but he was right. It's not just cheap, it's clear. After hearing @jason_lewis3's story about his dog and the keys, I guess my own dog would have an easier time hiding my stuff behind a solid fence too. Sometimes the practical choice is the smart one, even if it isn't the prettiest.

Yeah, murphy.mason, that "practical choice" thing... my uncle's clear fence just showed everyone his ugly garden.

Totally get that. I once argued for a fancy fence when a simple chain link would have let me see my dog burying my car keys.
