A customer told me my gate hinges were ugly and she was right
After she pointed it out I switched from those standard black strap hinges to some stainless steel ones with a decorative curl. Cost me an extra $40 for the set but now I'm using them on every job where the gate is visible from the street. Has anyone else had a client's comment change the way you spec hardware?

...or maybe she was just being polite and you were already looking for an excuse to upgrade. I mean, $40 for hinges? That's a whole box of screws and a six-pack right there. I had a guy once tell me my mailbox was "too suburban" and I just told him the HOA approved it. People have opinions, sure, but not every one of them needs to change your whole approach to hardware.

Hinges are one of those things you never notice until someone says "hey, those are ugly" and suddenly you can't unsee them. Guess I owe that lady a six-pack for saving me from my own bad taste.

You ever have one of those moments where you realize you've been walking around with ugly hinges your whole life and nobody told you? I had something similar with light switch covers once. My buddy @grays13 came over and pointed out my ivory plates were all yellowed and suddenly I couldn't see anything else in the room. Ended up replacing every single one in the house. Cost me more than a six-pack, that's for sure. Funny how one person's comment can make you spend an afternoon at the hardware store.
