Can we talk about how a random comment from my dad made me question my whole kraut process

He asked why I always burp my jars at 8 AM sharp, saying 'the bubbles don't read a clock,' and honestly, that simple point about rigid timing has me rethinking my entire 2-week ferment schedule now.

Honestly, I get where your dad's coming from, but I'm the total opposite. My whole process falls apart without a set routine. If I don't check my jars at the same time every day, I'll completely forget to do it. The schedule keeps me consistent, and my kraut turns out great every single time.

See, I've found the opposite works for me. I just check my kraut when I remember, maybe once every couple days. As long as the brine is covering it, it seems to do its own thing just fine. A strict schedule would stress me out more than help.

Yeah, @diana512, that kind of strict routine is the only way my brain works too, or it just never gets done.

Has anyone else had that moment where an offhand comment from someone else totally messes with your process? A buddy of mine, he's super into fermenting hot sauce, used to have this whole ritual where he'd check pH levels at the exact same minute every afternoon. Then his roommate walked by one day and just said "dude, the bacteria doesn't punch a timecard" and it broke his brain for a week. @susanb34 I think you'd actually get along with him because after that he chilled way out and started just eyeballing things more. Now he says his sauce tastes better when he's not stressing about the clock, which makes me wonder if my own burping schedule is more about me feeling in control than the actual kraut.
