Hot take: those fancy fermentation weights are a total waste of $25
Bought a set of glass weights for my kraut crock and one cracked after three uses, leaving little bits in the brine. Has anyone else just gone back to using a ziploc bag filled with water?

Honestly the ziploc bag trick works fine but it can be a pain. I've had them leak before and ruin a whole batch. I switched to using a small ceramic dish that fits inside my jar. It's just a ramekin from the dollar store, works as a weight and way easier to clean.

Yeah the ziploc leak thing is a real risk. I saw someone online say they use a clean river rock as a weight instead, boiled first.

Remember when we used those glass pebbles for fish tanks?

Yo I've actually heard from a few people that those glass weights are kinda hit or miss with quality control. My buddy Pete had one shatter on him during a hot fermentation and he said the pieces were tiny and sharp, had to toss the whole batch. He ended up just using a clean ceramic mug that fits inside his jar with a plate on top to hold it down. I've also read that some folks repurpose old pickle jars or mason jar rings with a ziploc inside to avoid the leak issue. The ziploc bag trick is solid if you double bag it, just make sure the outer bag is totally dry before you stick it in.
