I finally had to point out a dangerous ferment jar at a friend's place
Last week, I was at a friend's house and saw her fermenting hot sauce in a sealed glass jar. She used a tight lid with no airlock, which traps gas and can make it explode. I knew it was unsafe, but she was so happy with her first batch. I wrestled with telling her because I didn't want to crush her excitement. After thinking it over, I quietly mentioned the risk of breakage and spoiled food. She got a bit defensive at first, but later swapped the lid for a safer one. It felt rough, but I'm glad I said something. Always check your setup to avoid accidents like this.

Yeah, the part where she got defensive at first is so real. It made me wonder how many unsafe methods get passed around because someone's grandma or a viral video did it that way once without issue. The risk isn't just the jar, it's that a bad result could turn her off fermenting for good. Do you worry that common kitchen hacks make basic food safety seem less important?

Totally agree with you @johnb49... It's scary how many risky shortcuts get defended just because "that's how we've always done it." People get so stuck on family habits they forget basic safety.

It happens with all kinds of safety stuff, not just food. I see it with parents skipping car seat rules because their cousin did it and the kid was fine. Idk, maybe it's just me but when a shortcut goes viral, it makes the real rule seem like an overreaction. The scary part is people forget the rule existed at all.
