TIL my grandpa's root cellar idea fixed my sourdough woes

A cool corner beats a temp controller every time.

Guess we spent all that money on gadgets for nothing.

Funny how basements just have that magic stable chill. My grandma's old fruit cellar was where she'd stash her fermenting pickles. Always came out perfect, never any fuss. Makes you wonder what other old house tricks we've forgotten about. That cool earth smell just does something good for food.

My cellar always nails my ferments too, and @sarahf99 is right about gadgets being useless.

Remember trying to make sauerkraut in my apartment kitchen years ago and failing every time. Moved to a house with a crawl space and stuck a crock down there on a whim. That kraut fermented so slowly and evenly it was just right, with a crisp bite my kitchen attempts never had. There's a quiet wisdom in those old, cool spaces that modern gear just can't copy.
