Just realized my detailed tile layout proves grid lines aren't always needed

Most guys I talk to say you must snap chalk lines for every tile job to keep things straight. I finished a bathroom floor with a complex diamond pattern and skipped the full grid. By using a laser level and starting from the center, I adjusted tiles on the fly for a better fit. When I used grids on a similar design last month, I ended up with tiny gaps at the walls from small layout errors. Freehanding let me cheat each piece into place for a tight look. It takes a good eye and patience, but for artistic work, rigid lines can box you in. Trust your measurements and sight lines more than always relying on that chalk box.

You're asking for trouble skipping grids like that. Most guys use chalk lines because without them, your whole layout can drift off course. What works on one fancy job might wreck the next one for a regular installer.

Totally get what you mean, @christopher_torres66. I actually tried going without grids once and man, did I regret it halfway through. Found my best bet was to snap just one main line as a guide and check my work constantly.

Tbh, shortcuts always bite you back, not just in tiling.

My buddy Pete skipped the chalk lines on a backsplash last month and ended up with a full inch of drift by the end. @christopher_torres66 is right, it'll wreck you.
