My trip to a big iron casters meet in Texas has me debating with myself

I learned about their different sand mixtures that cut down on defects. Half the guys here say we should try mixing like them, but the other half says our local sand is fine and changing could cause problems. Do you ever pick up ideas from visiting other shops, or is it better to just focus on your own yard?

Forget copying other shops and their fancy sand mixes. Sticking with your local stuff builds real skill because you learn to fix problems instead of avoiding them. Changing your whole process for one trip is how you end up with a bigger mess than you started with.

Actually, it's usually called a foundry meet, not casters. Getting the terms right helps when you're asking around for advice later. That sand debate is pretty normal after seeing how another shop does things.

How is your setup right now? Green sand is way easier to manage when you're just starting out.

Yeah, gotta back up Sam on the foundry thing, it saves confusion later. Alex is right about green sand being simpler to start with though.
