My 20-year-old water heater finally died during a family dinner
It started leaking right as my in-laws sat down to eat last Friday in Marietta, and the plumber quoted $1,900 to swap in a new one, but I'm wondering if I should just try a tankless unit instead since my electric bill has been creeping up for 3 years, has anyone else made that switch and regretted it?

Have you looked into whether your house can even handle a tankless unit without a big electrical upgrade? That is the part people skip when they start comparing prices. Tankless electric units usually need a lot more power, sometimes a whole new panel and dedicated circuits, and that can run you a few thousand bucks on top of the unit itself. So that $1,900 quote for a normal tank swap might actually be the cheaper path once you add up the real install cost. Also, tankless does not always cut your bill as much as you would hope if your family takes long showers back to back.
