My instant read thermometer read 350 in a pot of boiling water

Last Tuesday I was making pasta and my cheap probe said the water was at 350 degrees. The noodles came out crunchy and the sauce was cold, I almost served it before checking with my backup thermometer. Has anyone else had a tool go bad in a way that seemed fine but was clearly lying the whole time?
