The 'clean' gym towel trick that broke my workout brain
I spent 3 months at a Planet Fitness in Tucson judging people who wiped machines with the same towel over and over. Then I saw one guy drop his towel, pick it up, and keep wiping, and it hit me that the whole cleaning ritual is just theater. Nobody ever actually cleans those benches, the spray bottle is mostly water. I tested it by wiping one machine with a dry towel and another with the spray, then checked both with a blacklight I borrowed from my buddy. The results were identical, which means every gym wipe I've done since 2019 was pure performance. Am I the only one who feels dumb for doing this for so long, or have you caught someone phoning it in too?
That line about every gym wipe since 2019 being pure performance got me, because I used to be the guy who felt good about spraying down a bench after every set. I figured the gym was gross and I was doing my part, but then I found out those spray bottles are often just water with a drop of blue dye, so I was basically giving the machine a little bath. Now I just wipe with my own towel and don't pretend it's doing anything.
