Turning 40 hit different than I expected, and it wasn't the age itself
I mean, I always figured birthdays were just numbers, right? But the morning I turned 40, I was standing in my kitchen in Columbus making coffee and I just froze. It wasn't the wrinkles or the ache in my knee, it was the coffee mug in my hand. That mug was from my first real job out of college, and I'd carried it through three apartments, two relationships, and one whole career change. Holding that same stupid mug at 40 made me realize I'd been doing the same routine, the same commute, the same side of the bed for way too long. So last month I sold the house I'd owned for 14 years, gave the mug to Goodwill, and moved to a studio near the river. Has anyone else had a totally random object or moment trigger their big change, or am I just weird about coffee cups?
