My attempt to save childhood videos almost ended in disaster

I found a stack of VHS tapes in my basement from when I was a kid, full of birthday parties and summer trips. I decided to digitize them last week as a fun project to revisit those memories. When I hooked up the old VCR, the picture was all wavy and the audio sounded like static. A friend told me that tape glue can dry out and the film inside can stick together over time. I had to carefully rewind each tape by hand to avoid tearing, which was a huge pain. A couple tapes were so bad that sections are just gone forever, which really sucks. If you have old home videos stored away, try playing them soon to see if they're still okay. Waiting could mean losing bits of your past for good.

Yikes, I used to think VHS tapes were bulletproof, but @the_sandra's story about the wedding tape snapping proved me wrong. Guess I need to dig out my own before they turn to dust.

That "turn to dust" line hits hard. My old concert tapes are probably just magnetic flakes in a plastic shell by now. Makes you want to go check the closet, doesn't it?

Oh man, that tape glue thing is so real (I learned the hard way too). I had a tape from my sister's wedding that got all wavy and then just snapped when I tried to play it. The worst part is that some moments, like the first dance, are just gone forever. It's scary how fast these tapes go bad if they're just sitting in a box. I tell everyone to check their old tapes now, not later. Even if you don't digitize them right away, at least play them to see if they still work.

My buddy had a box of home movies from the 90s that he never touched. When he finally tried to watch them, the tape inside was sticky and tore apart. He lost footage of his kid's first steps because the glue just gave out. It was a real wake-up call about how fragile these old tapes are. Now he tells people to test their tapes every few years to avoid that heartbreak. What kind of tapes did you have that held up better or worse?
