Can we talk about the creeping expectation to maintain multiple streaming subscriptions?

This culture of constant content access is quietly dismantling the discipline of discretionary spending. I've watched friends rationalize five different services as essential, when a simple library card could cover most of their entertainment needs.

My buddy was paying for four different services and only really watched one. He finally checked his bank statements and realized he'd been paying for two he forgot to cancel after free trials. It was a wake-up call.

It's part of a wider shift where convenience is monetized into perpetual obligations. We've moved from owning DVDs to renting access, and now to subscribing to entire catalogs that we barely scratch the surface of. Look at how people juggle Netflix for originals, Hulu for current TV, and Disney+ for family content, all while complaining about budget constraints. This subscription creep mirrors the gym membership model, where we pay for idealized versions of ourselves rather than actual usage. It normalizes financial commitments that are easy to start but psychologically hard to cancel, eroding our ability to prioritize true needs over marketed wants.

The gym membership model? I'm basically donating to my local gym.
